    "Great read every day. Makes me smile as Rab muses about music and his irreverent views on the EU. Tune in, you won't be disappointed."

    "Excellent 'Blog' which can be controversial at times, while maintaining it's humour. Keep it up Big Rab!"

    "Updated every day with doses of good humour, political satire, a running commentary on the progress of author's home football team and his life."

    "Pure brilliant, so it is - I never miss it, though God knows, I've tried."

    "An inspiration to start my own blog"

    "For dipping into it's better than pakora sauce"

    "Anyone who doesn't like the EU and has a soft spot for Albion Rovers can't be all bad"

    "Facile and False"

    "Populist,puerile and prosaic"

    "Utter pish! Keep it up, I love it!"

    "People may also find the Ben Lomond Free Press blog illuminating, interesting and/or amusing. It’s not mentalist as such but familiar themes emerge. I particularly like accounts of encounters with strange elementals (of course! ELEmentals!) from elfin safety. And the fact that the blog is run by someone who plays in a blues band called Harmonica Lewinsky."

General Failure

Ever heard of Glittering Generalities? They are words and phrases used by politicians which mean precisely not very much and more often than not, the square root of hee-haw. Glittering generalities were much loved and often used in the heady days of New Labour. Perhaps the most often used one was ‘hard working families’ or hardworkingfamilies.

I wrote about a former Scottish Labour Leader’s use of glittering generalities here more than four years ago.

It seems that based on her success, current Scottish Labour Leader Johann Lamont is determined to follow in her predecessor’s footsteps.

From this morning’s BBC news:

I’m sure the SNP’s reaction will be similar to what it was to wee Wendy.

Alexander the Second?

Ah it doesn’t take long for the news to overtake the humble blogger.

It seems that Eric Joyce has been charged with assault and released on police bail.

This was after Joyce was earlier suspended from the Labour Party pending the outcome.

Johann Lamont it is who’s in charge of Scottish Labour MPs and MSPs and here is Johann shortly after she made the decision to suspend the hon. member.

Johann Lamont

Apologies, there seems to be some sort of error here. A picture of Labour Chief Whip Rosie Winterton has appeared instead of Johann Lamont.

For the avoidance of doubt it is Ms Lamont who has responsibility for all Scottish MPs and MSPs and not Ms Wintterton or Mr Milipede.

Just who is the most odious man in Scotland?

I’m thinking a man associated with a once proud, but now bankrupt Scottish institution with an extremely uncertain future. A man who has had no shame in accumulating wealth in a web of complicated financial dealing at others expense and who cannot seem to be contacted by anyone.

Police are currently studying events and prosecutors wait with bated breath.

Yes I’m talking about Eric Joyce.

"You're claimed ya bashtart"

He was the first MP to accumulate £1 million in expenses.

When his expenses claim of £200,000 in 2010 raised eyebrows, he hit back claiming that middle class voters were hypocrites, branding them liars, racists, drunkards and even paedophiles.

The Falkirk MP previously spent the night in a police cell a couple of years ago having been caught driving over the drink driving limit and was subsequently banned from driving.

On Wednesday night he apparently administered some old fashioned Scots rough and tumble (A Glesca kiss and Falkirk fist) to Conservative Stuart Andrew in the Strangers Bar at the House of Commons.

Thankfully Mr Andrew, described in reports as the “Pudsey MP” doesn’t seem too badly injured.

A Labour of Love

I had almost forgotten that the result of the Scottish Labour leadership election will be announced today. It seems like a direct contest between Johann Lamont and Ken McIntosh.

Personally I think anyone who would want to lead Scottish Labour at the moment should be debarred from doing so on the grounds of insanity. I notice that Jackie Baillie, MSP for Dumbarton has very wisely stayed clear of the process.

Scottish Labour have to decide on a story that the electorate can believe. The SNP have struck several chords with several key policies and seem to now inhabit the territory once occupied by Labour with the liberally minded middle class jumping aboard as a bonus.

That is a formidable bandwagon to try to slow down.

Ye Labourites by Name

Via Mark MacLachlan

Elliot Steven adapted the lyrics of Burns anti-war, humanist ‘Ye Jacobites by Name’ to ‘Ye Labourites by Name’ stuck it up on the cheesey blog and the delightful Weegiewarbler sitting on a boat somewhere sunny, I presume the Dominican Republic, belted out her take on it…Brilliant!

Ye Labourites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear;
Ye Labourites by name, lend an ear;
Ye Labourites by name,
Your fautes I will proclaim,
Your doctrines I maun blame–
You shall hear, you shall hear.
Your doctrines I maun blame–You shall hear.

What is right, and what is wrang, by the law, by the law?
What is right and what is wrang, by the law?
What is right and what is wrang?
A short sword, and a lang,
A 6 month prison term
For them a’, for them a’
A 6 month prison term For them a’.

What makes heroic strife, fam’d afar, fam’d afar?
What makes heroic strife, fam’d afar?
What makes heroic strife?
To run wi’oot a fight
And excuse a coward’s flite
Wi’ bluidie war, bludie war
And excuse a coward’s flite wi’ bluidie war.

Then let your schemes alone, in the state, in the state;
Then let your schemes alone in the state;
Then let your schemes alone,
Adore the rising sun,
And leave a man undone
To his fate, to his fate.
And leave a man undone to his fate.

Denial – Not Just a River in Africa!

Just read this article in the Daily Record. I doubt if I’ll read a bigger load of pish this year.
