"Great read every day. Makes me smile as Rab muses about music and his irreverent views on the EU. Tune in, you won't be disappointed."

"Excellent 'Blog' which can be controversial at times, while maintaining it's humour. Keep it up Big Rab!"

"Updated every day with doses of good humour, political satire, a running commentary on the progress of author's home football team and his life."

"Pure brilliant, so it is - I never miss it, though God knows, I've tried."

"An inspiration to start my own blog"

"For dipping into it's better than pakora sauce"

"Anyone who doesn't like the EU and has a soft spot for Albion Rovers can't be all bad"

    "Facile and False"

    "Populist,puerile and prosaic"

"Utter pish! Keep it up, I love it!"

"People may also find the Ben Lomond Free Press blog illuminating, interesting and/or amusing. It’s not mentalist as such but familiar themes emerge. I particularly like accounts of encounters with strange elementals (of course! ELEmentals!) from elfin safety. And the fact that the blog is run by someone who plays in a blues band called Harmonica Lewinsky."

More from Retronaut

Panties

Retronaut

Stu has reminded me about Retronaut a fine site of mainly 20th century photos. You can easily lose yourself for an hour or two browsing the weird and wonderful stuff they have there.

Here are your starters for ten:

monroe

Marylin Monroe entertains US troops – Korea 1954

Communism

“Picture yourself on a boat on Volga River”

Cafe Society

I’ve been lost for hours on the Retronaut site.

There is just such fascinating stuff on there. I found a link to the following video, which was one of a series of “Look at Life” films which ran as pre feature shorts in cinemas of the day (in this case 1959). This piece about Soho coffee shops is fantastic on so many levels. The Mr Cholmondley Warner style narrative is priceless – in particular the ‘humorous’ observations which from 2011 seem lame indeed.

Well worth the eight minutes:

Retronaut

I wasn’t aware of this site but my regular correspondent John O’Hare sent me the link.

This stuff is right up my street. Here is a cross section of what I have found there.

First a letter from Mick Jagger to Andy Warhol about the cover for ‘Sticky Fingers’

How about this high resolution photo of London in 1949? If you click here you’ll see other photos and you can enlarge to full screen.

And what about this postcard of a hotel from 1969?

I found that by clicking a link on this page which took me here

Then there’s a whole page of 60s and 70s Soviet car ads

But really there is just a whole treasure trove of stuff.

Expect to read more about it!
