"Great read every day. Makes me smile as Rab muses about music and his irreverent views on the EU. Tune in, you won't be disappointed."

"Excellent 'Blog' which can be controversial at times, while maintaining it's humour. Keep it up Big Rab!"

"Updated every day with doses of good humour, political satire, a running commentary on the progress of author's home football team and his life."

"Pure brilliant, so it is - I never miss it, though God knows, I've tried."

"An inspiration to start my own blog"

"For dipping into it's better than pakora sauce"

"Anyone who doesn't like the EU and has a soft spot for Albion Rovers can't be all bad"

    "Facile and False"

    "Populist,puerile and prosaic"

"Utter pish! Keep it up, I love it!"

"People may also find the Ben Lomond Free Press blog illuminating, interesting and/or amusing. It’s not mentalist as such but familiar themes emerge. I particularly like accounts of encounters with strange elementals (of course! ELEmentals!) from elfin safety. And the fact that the blog is run by someone who plays in a blues band called Harmonica Lewinsky."

Post Independence?

The picture is becoming clearer on what Scotland would look like after independence.

We’d have the pound, the monarchy, a shared welfare system, Trident (at least for a while), continuation of the BBC, The Bank of England as a central bank…….

Can anyone tell me what would be different?

  1. We d have our FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM ! Well actually we wouldn t cos if we get independence we ll also get more of Alex and Kenny and their control freakery anti devolution politics. We ll have less freedom and less individual independence in return for their removing ever more of our ability to choose how to live our lives in our wee insignificant isolated parochial forgotten economic backwater in the North Atlantic (but maybe not in NATO) ! Its happy happy happy !!

  2. Good question. I suspect the answer is “fuck all”. Maybe it’s enough if you’re still in a mess, but at least it’s your own mess.

  3. “live our lives in our wee insignificant isolated parochial forgotten economic backwater in the North Atlantic” You could be describing Norway but no, the people of that wee backwater have balls and pride and confidence in themselves. How sad it is to see and hear people with so little vision or imagination for the future of the very country they live in. EVERY country should be independent while aligning, federating and cooperating with their neighbours to their mutual advantage. Vote YES.

    • I agree in spirit Tam. However there doesn’t seem to be much imagination and vision from the yes campaign. Any opportunity they have to lay out plans for a post independent Scotland, pretty much seems to come down to ‘it’ll be much as before’.

If that’s the case then what IS the big idea? I try genuinely to retain an open mind on the subject and I am undecided on how I’ll vote.

I have spent a bit of time in England recently and I’m going back next week. The town has a 40,000 population and has seen better days. I don’t feel as if I’m in a foreign country there – other than the accents it could be Kilmarnock, Dunfermline or Ayr.

I need some reasons to vote yes and they need to be sound logical ones. There are some, but not enough at the moment as far as I’m concerned.

The same goes for the no campaign incidentally. I’ll have to get over my urge to punch Alistair Darling and Danny Alexander.

    • And who will lead this return to the past…..are they “fit for purpose”. Apparently archaic medieval thinking is an athema to our current leaders. So why are we looking backwards? The same MSP s who told their constituents they d fight to keep their courts open ( local justice good, justice delayed justice denied etc etc) then vote to close them cos Kenny says so (cos they re old apparently) are to front the independent country. Hmmm let me think about that one for a nanosecond………….
