I wrote below that few people in Boston had probably even heard of Dagestan until now. The first time I’d heard of it was on a photo featured in this posting from 2010.
Whilst reading about Dagestan today, I found this photo which is almost certainly part of the remarkable Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii collection from the early years of the twentieth century. This photo is dated 1904:
Judging by the man’s weaponry and ammunition it would appear that safety and security was an issue in the country back then too.
