From today it is technically illegal to sell cosmetics in the EU that have been tested on animals.
I say technically because many cosmetics manufacturers operate in global markets. In China and Brazil for example, it is mandatory for cosmetics to have been tested on animals before being sold.
A lady from the cosmetics industry did her best to explain how they would deal with such an apparent dichotomy on Radio Scotland this morning.
I may paraphrase slightly but the basis of her explanation was that new products for the EU would not be tested on animals. Only once they were on sale in Europe, would the necessary animal testing be done for other international markets(!)
I can’t criticise the EU for this piece of legislation, but unless the products concerned are exclusively for sale in Europe then I don’t see how this will alleviate cruelty at all.
