"Great read every day. Makes me smile as Rab muses about music and his irreverent views on the EU. Tune in, you won't be disappointed."

"Excellent 'Blog' which can be controversial at times, while maintaining it's humour. Keep it up Big Rab!"

"Updated every day with doses of good humour, political satire, a running commentary on the progress of author's home football team and his life."

"Pure brilliant, so it is - I never miss it, though God knows, I've tried."

"An inspiration to start my own blog"

"For dipping into it's better than pakora sauce"

"Anyone who doesn't like the EU and has a soft spot for Albion Rovers can't be all bad"

    "Facile and False"

    "Populist,puerile and prosaic"

"Utter pish! Keep it up, I love it!"

"People may also find the Ben Lomond Free Press blog illuminating, interesting and/or amusing. It’s not mentalist as such but familiar themes emerge. I particularly like accounts of encounters with strange elementals (of course! ELEmentals!) from elfin safety. And the fact that the blog is run by someone who plays in a blues band called Harmonica Lewinsky."

This World is Phuhll o’ a Number o’ Things

I think it is safe to assume that this is the only song in the world which refers to both former Dundee United player Eamon Bannon and clarinet player Acker Bilk.

This is “Saint Andrew”, the alter ego of Dundee singer songwriter Michael Marra.

  1. Hi, I don’t think Michael Marra and Saint Andrew are the same person……. willing to be proven wrong though.

    • You are correct.
They are two completely different people. One is tall whilst the other is small. The tall one has a reasonable amount of talent whilst the wee one oozes the stuff.
      I am the tall one.

    • Aye, I’ve been trying to track all this down since I saw this today…..

I spoke to Paul Pirie – a stand-up comedian from Dundee – and he told me Saint Andrew was an art lecturer from Dundee.

I’m almost 99% they aren’t the same person; they have really different voices.

  2. Ok, think I’ve tracked down the relevant info…….

On this page, http://www.radioawards.org/winners/?awid=8&awname=The+%27Music+Special%27+Award&year=2005 , there is an entry for a documentary on Michael Marra which includes interviews from Michael Marra, Liz Lochead, and Andy Pelc ‘aka Saint Andrew’

Googling Andy Pelc gets you to here: http://www.dundee.ac.uk/design/profiles.php?profile=andy-pelc which would fit with the info from Mr Pirie.

It’s far from definitive but it’ll have to do for now as I’ve got work to do! 😉

  3. Well thanks for that Ciaran.

I always thought it was MM himself. It would seem though he was closely involved in the project.

  4. I wouldn’t have been 100% sure myself until I checked and double-checked.

Michael Marra performs Saint Andrew’s songs – Baps and Paste, for example – or perhaps its the other way around.

Anyway, none of this really matters – an excellent song, a brilliant album. It’s rare to be alehv!

  5. Anerboy

I realise that now – thanks!

  6. Andy Pelc is St Andrew.
His band was St Andrew and the Woolen Mill.
    Classic stuff.
    I have a cassette…

    • Hi Chris – hope you are well. Its been ages – too long !!
I am Andy Pelc (aka St A).
Those who know myself and Michael will know that, whilst we have many things in common, we are not the same person. I like potted hough – Michael doesnt.
Best wishes to all who run this site.

  7. Here’s ome other ‘You Big Tube’ links.
    Hope you enjoy.

  8. Andy, many thanks for those links. I’ve featured some of ’em before.

  9. Hi Andy .
    Do you remember me ,
Gordon Angus from fingarth St .
We used to go up to the Kerbert fishing a couple of times a week
